The Apple Vision Pro may soon face stiff competition from Huawei’s rumored mixed-reality headset, according to a new report. Apple launched its $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2.9 lakh) headset in the market earlier this month, which is powered by dual M2 and R1 chipsets and has 12 different cameras. But now, a wearable device from the Chinese brand, called Huawei Vision, may outperform its Cupertino-based rival in several parameters. Notably, it is said to weigh half as much as the Vision Pro.
Details about Huawei’s under-the-wrap headset come from a Weibo post made by Li Nan, former marketing director of Chinese consumer tech brand Meizu (via Huawei Central). In the post, he not only revealed the name of the product as Huawei Vision, a name that was reportedly trademarked by the company in 2019, but also revealed that it could offer better value than the Apple Vision Pro.
According to the post, the mixed-reality headset could weigh 350 grams, which would be half the 600-gram weight of the Apple Vision Pro. But low weight may not mean a substandard product. Li Nan also highlighted that the Chinese brand may use the same 4K Sony micro-OLED display that Apple has used for its headset. It is noteworthy that most users have found the display experience of Apple’s wearable to be the main attraction. Additionally, it is also rumored that the Huawei Vision could be priced at $1,750 (roughly Rs. 1.45 lakh), which is half the price of the Apple headset.
Furthermore, the post also mentions that the Huawei Vision may be powered by a processor originally developed by the company and offer a zero-lag experience. It will be interesting to see how the company looks to find the right silicon innovation to support such emerging technology and compete with Apple’s processors, which are said to have 12 ms response time and 256 Gbps bandwidth. The Vision Pro handles data from multiple sensors.
One downside highlighted in the post is the Apple Vision Pro’s lack of a similar feature to Eyesight. This feature projects a replica of the user’s eyes on the outer edge of the glasses to make it easier for non-users to interact with the person. However, some people have reported not being fans of this feature because it feels unnatural.
Although no launch date has been revealed, Huawei’s mixed-reality headset is rumored to launch later this year.
