Panda, the world’s largest living creature, may be the oldest living creature, new study reveals

A recent study has revealed new insight into the giant quaking aspen clone Pando in Fishlake National Forest, Utah, revealing that this massive creature may be up to 80,000 years old. The study, conducted by Roseanne Pineau, a researcher at Utah State University, revealed Panda’s potential age by examining its unique clonal growth pattern and genetic mutations, which indicate that the creature may have been thriving since early human migration out of Africa. . The research, currently posted on bioRxiv for peer review, examines the mutation rate in Pando’s genome, which is estimated to have lasted between 16,000 and 80,000 years.

the world’s largest living organism

Pando, which means “I spread” in Latin, holds the title of the world’s largest single organism, spanning more than 100 acres and consisting of approximately 47,000 stems. This huge clonal colony arises from a single root system that connects each stem, making Pando not only widespread in area but also the heaviest living organism in the world. According to Paul Rogers, director of the Western Aspen Alliance, the genetic continuity of aspen’s root system enables it to withstand environmental changes. Rogers said no previous study had confirmed Pando’s age, making the study an important milestone in understanding the creature’s ancient origins.

Genetic findings and environmental challenges

Pineau’s research highlights that Pando’s mutation spread is lower than estimated, with neighboring stems showing limited genetic diversity despite spatial proximity. This suggests a surprising level of genetic stability in Pando over thousands of years. While analyzing pollen from a nearby lake bed, researchers noted that aspen pollen has consistently appeared in the sediments for more than 60,000 years, potentially confirming the ancient presence of Pando in the area.

To deal with threats from deer and cattle grazing, conservation measures have been implemented, with fenced sections now protecting parts of the grove. Rogers observed encouraging signs of regeneration during a recent visit, indicating that fencing and favorable rainfall could aid the panda’s recovery.
