Flamanville 3 nuclear reactor in France begins operation after long delay

France’s nuclear power sector reached an important milestone as the Flamanville 3 European pressurized reactor in Normandy was successfully connected to the national electricity grid. According to reports, the 1,600 MW reactor, which is now the most powerful in the country, started supplying power at 11:48 am local time on Saturday. Officials at state-owned energy company EDF told media that despite facing years of technical issues, delays and cost overruns, the connection marks an important chapter in the country’s energy strategy.

decades in the making

The Flamanville 3 project, launched in 2007, was designed to revive interest in nuclear energy across Europe after previous disasters. Reports indicate that its advanced pressurized water reactor technology provides increased efficiency and improved safety measures. EDF’s CEO, Luc Raymont, called the development “historic”, noting that it was the first new reactor to begin operations in France in 25 years. Challenges during the reactor’s construction phase extended its timeline by 17 years, with costs rising from an initial €3.3 billion to an estimated €13.2 billion.

Testing phase and future plans

According to reports, it has been confirmed by EDF that Flamanville 3 will undergo extensive testing at various power levels until the summer of 2025. A full inspection, lasting approximately 250 days, is expected to take place in spring 2026. The facility is estimated to supply electricity to more than two million homes once fully operational. France’s nuclear program remains one of the most prominent globally, contributing about 60 percent of the country’s electricity production.

Government’s commitment towards nuclear energy

President Emmanuel Macron has highlighted in the media the importance of nuclear power in the country’s transition towards sustainable energy sources. The government has announced plans for six additional next-generation reactors and potential options for eight more, demonstrating its commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Macron has previously described nuclear development as essential for both energy security and climate protection.
