An initial draft text for a new Collective Quantified Target (NCQG) on climate finance was published at COP29 by the Co-Chairs of the NCQG Contact Group, marking an important step forward in advancing the primary negotiating goal of the COP29 Presidency. The draft is intended to serve as a “practical basis for discussion” to refine climate finance commitments. Aid to Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, addressing delegates at the Summit of Leaders of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), stressed Azerbaijan’s commitment to advocating for the interests of these vulnerable countries. The summit, organized in collaboration with the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), the Caribbean Community and the Pacific Islands Forum, highlighted the challenges facing SIDS, including the need for improved climate finance and resilience strategies.
President Aliyev stressed that the unique circumstances of SIDS necessitate urgent support, with Azerbaijan supporting the issue at COP29. In line with this commitment, Azerbaijan has provided financial support for the participation, along with additional support from the UNFCCC Trust Fund, as well as the presence of key SIDS representatives.
COP Presidency Troika discusses climate targets
Azerbaijan (COP29), the United Arab Emirates (COP28), and Brazil (COP30) met as part of the COP Presidency Troika to review progress on the “Roadmap to Mission 1.5” and evaluate the implementation of climate policies in line with the Global Stocktake.
