Ancient bronze statues recovered from an Etruscan healing spring in Italy


Bronze statues, including one depicting snakes and a child priest, have been found in a hot spring in San Cassiano dei Bagni, Italy, according to Italy’s culture ministry, according to reports. The site, located about 120 kilometers northwest of Rome, has been excavated since 2019 and is believed to have been used for sacred rituals dating back to the 3rd century BC. Discovery of snake statues and other artefacts

The bronze snake figurines, which measured up to 90 centimeters in length, were among the latest findings during the 2024 excavation, the excavation team reported. These idols were discovered in the deep layers of the spring and are believed to symbolize the protection of the sacred water. Other artefacts include a naked male figure bearing the name “Gaius Roscius” and a child priest holding a ball, which may have been used in divination rituals.

Preserved biological remains found

Excavations also yielded well-preserved biological remains, such as eggs with visible yolks, pine cones, and plant matter. The objects would have been used in rituals symbolizing rebirth and regeneration, the Italian Culture Ministry said in a statement. The preservation of these objects is attributed to their rapid burial in the sediment.
