OnePlus Pad: Stepping into unfamiliar territory with a premium Android tablet

OnePlus Tab is a new product from the Chinese smartphone brand and the company has decided to take a big and bold step by launching a premium tablet. This makes the premium-looking OnePlus Pad stand out against offerings from Samsung, Lenovo, and even Apple. We’re not sure if this is the first of many Android-powered tablets to come, but OnePlus has instilled some confidence in buyers by announcing three new accessories to enhance their tablet experience. Although we haven’t tested the OnePlus Pad yet, we have seen some details, some of which are positive and some negative.

On this week’s episode of the Gadgets 360 podcast Orbital, host and reviewer Pranav Hegde talks to senior reviewer Sheldon Pinto (himself) about my impressions of the OnePlus Pad so far. We discussed everything from its price to its design, its new accessories and even the competition.

We start with the pricing, and our attention is immediately drawn to the lack of cellular connectivity, which OnePlus has missed. The tablet is only available in one model and it offers everything one would expect from a premium tablet except cellular connectivity, making hotspot tethering the only way to stay connected on the go.

The design of the OnePlus Pad is definitely its selling point. Apart from being sleek, its design is very unique and those thick antenna lines also remind us of some of the older iPhone models. The center-mounted camera at the back definitely adds a unique touch.

Also interesting is the 11.61-inch LCD display of the OnePlus Pad that offers a 144Hz adaptive screen refresh rate, but it also has a lower 144Hz touch sampling rate, which may not be good for gamers. There are also a few other minor issues with the display that we’ll discuss besides its odd 7:5 display aspect ratio.

The tablet features a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC and our review unit came with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. OnePlus seems to have optimized its software well, but not just in terms of intuitiveness, but also in terms of tablet-friendly features.

Battery life from the 9,510mAh cell seems solid so far, but we’ve yet to test the tablet’s capabilities in both work and casual modes. We also discuss what our experience has been like with the OnePlus Magnetic Keyboard Case and its tiny trackpad before checking out the competition, including Apple’s new iPad 2022 as it also comes with similar accessories. The price is a little high.
