Micron Technology chief Sanjay Mehrotra on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed plans to strengthen the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem within India. Micron Technology chief met the Prime Minister in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
He is in India to attend the three-day ‘SemiconIndia 2023’ conference, which began here on Friday.
The conference, its second edition, organized by India Semiconductor Mission in partnership with industry and industry associations, aims to make India a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing and technology development. SemiconIndia was held in Bengaluru last year.
The theme of the conference is ‘Catalyzing India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem’.
Regarding the meeting between the CEO of Micron Technology and PM Modi in the Prime Minister’s Office Tweeted“Mr. Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman & CEO of @MicronTech, met PM @NarendraModi in Gandhinagar. They discussed Micron Technology’s plans to strengthen the semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem within India.
This is not the first time that PM Modi has met the CEO of Micron. Earlier in June, when PM Modi had gone to America, there was a wonderful meeting between the two.
Mehrotra said, “I had an excellent meeting with PM Modi. I am very impressed by his vision for India and the progress India is making. We discussed a range of topics and we really look forward to the huge opportunities in India.” Let’s hope.” Said at that time.
Last month, during PM Modi’s visit to America, Micron Technology had announced its investment plans in India. Micron Technology committed to invest up to $825 million (about Rs 6,800 crore) to build a new semiconductor assembly and test facility in India in collaboration with the Indian government.
Micron had said it chose Gujarat’s Sanand Industrial Park (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation – GIDC) due to its manufacturing infrastructure, favorable business environment and strong talent pipeline.
Meanwhile, India and the US have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on establishing semiconductor supply chains during the India-USA 5th Commercial Dialogue 2023, which will further India’s long-cherished vision of becoming an electronic goods hub. Can help make dreams come true.
The MoU seeks to establish a collaborative mechanism between the two governments on semiconductor supply chain resilience and diversification in the wake of the US Chips and Science Act and India’s Semiconductor Mission.
America and China are giants in chip manufacturing. Therefore, this agreement with the US is likely to be of great help to India in strengthening cooperation in the semiconductor sector to facilitate commercial opportunities and develop innovation ecosystem.
This could help India play a more central role in the global electronics supply chain. The semiconductor supply shortage began during COVID-19 and intensified in 2021.
