Google testing ‘nested’ AI summaries displayed inside AI overview: report

Google’s AI overview will reportedly be updated with feature improvements that will allow users to delve deeper into a topic. According to the report, Google is experimenting with a new feature for its Artificial Intelligence (AI) search summary feature. With this, users can highlight a portion of text shown in the AI overview and run a secondary AI search. This feature is currently under development, and it is not known when it will be introduced to all users. This was spotted in the latest beta version of the Google app.

How Google Could Expand Its AI Overview Feature

Android Authority has spotted a new AI Overview feature on Google Apps beta version 15.45.33 that allows users to go deeper into AI-generated summaries. The feature was discovered in collaboration with AssembleDebug, an account that posts new features spotted on various apps and the Android operating system.

AI Overview generally allows users to run AI searches on most searched queries on Google Search. When users run a search query, AI Overview finds relevant information by crawling different websites to provide a quick summary of the query.

According to the publication, with the new feature, users can select specific text in the AI overview and see another AI-powered summary. This means users can ask AI to provide a deeper understanding of the topic based on its previous answers. However, the report highlights that users will not be able to highlight any text to trigger another AI overview query.

According to the description, it appears that the feature is only available when users select text that requires further explanation of the topic. Additionally, it is reportedly not currently possible to run a second or further level of AI search on a subject. Therefore, users cannot dive into a topic infinitely by continuously selecting text in the previous AI summary.

Specifically, according to the publication, a second level of AI overview will be displayed below the first level of AI summary. Since this feature is still under development, it is unclear how long it may take for it to be available to the public.
